A visit to Shakespeare's Globe is one of the best summer experiences in London and there are few places in the world where you can see theatre of this calibre so cheaply. For five English pounds you can become a groundling for the evening and do as the Elizabethans did; stand in the yard in front of the stage to watch the play. From this viewpoint, the star-crossed lovers of Romeo and Juliet, the artful disguises in As You Like It or the wartime passion in Troilus and Cressida are right in front of you, ensconcing you in the midst of Shakespeare's worlds. Wherever you're sitting, the theatre has the heart of a 16th century playhouse, even if some of the finer details have been guessed at, and it's impossible not to become part of the bustling, expectant atmosphere. Of the Shakespeare's, artistic director Dominic Dromgoole will direct the new Romeo and Juliet to open the season and then revive his 2007 production of Love's Labour's Lost to close. In between, Thea Sharrock makes her Globe debut with As You Like It and Matthew Dunster brings the first full-scale Troilus and Cressida to the Globe stage as well as reviving Che Walker's The Frontline from the 2008 season. There are also world premieres of Frank McGuinness' version of Euripides' drama Helen and A New World: A Life of Thomas Paine by Trevor Griffiths.
