Offering a little piece of ancient Egypt in the heart of Hackney, LMNT may look like a traditional pub on the outside but once through the doors the decor is decidedly Egyptian. Sphinx fireplaces, mummies' casks and a huge Greek-effect mask dominating one wall are just some of the ancient looking antiquities. But that doesn't mean you'll be sampling some Egyptian food. The menu is European and the influence of Peter Ilic (a Yugoslav) is still felt - it was he who originally opened LMNT in 2000, converting the former pub into this eccentric eaterie. Head chef Slavko Bogdanovic has reorganised and restyled the menu which includes things like cod fillet with sag aloo potatoes and confit of duck served with pak choi. Somehow the odd combination of hieroglyphics, opera music and good quality, affordable food works very well. And it certainly makes for a different dining experience.
